Whereabouts

October 8–October 30, 2022
Opening reception Saturday, October 8, 3–5 PM

Whereabouts presents the work of Matt LaFleur and Ruby Palmer. Both artists are invested in exploring spatial relationships. Some of these spaces are recalled from memory, some are invented and many are products of an informed imagination. All are unique. Often strange. Always interesting.

“There are a variety of drawings in Whereabouts, spanning the past five years with a few exceptions being older than that. Planters, staircases, icicles, televisions, pine wood, houses, bucking stands, lilies, firewood boxes, apples, and bricks, are all present here, along with cherries, tulips, and R/G/B. My hope is these works condense with one another, that there is a transference between errand spaces, patterns and objects. Like finding an old elixir bottle, full of till, buried in the forest floor.”

“I am investigating the experience of both observing a space visually and moving through it physically. I’m interested in putting the haphazard or slap dash up against more solidly built geometries, allowing humorous solutions. Floral motifs, a reflection of my attraction to fabrics and wallpapers, will mash up against plain or simply painted sections. I’m looking for clues in building methods from tents, fences, shelving, children’s forts, beach coverings to hide from the sun, from barriers built along highways to block the noise, vernacular architecture seen from the car when driving along country roads-out buildings, greenhouses built from plastic. In life, we patch together and build it then take it down and rebuild. Working and resting. Messy and delicate. Fragile yet strong.”
