“Nature is a haunted house”
—Emily Dickinson
“It was a widely held belief in Puritan New England that the woods were the refuge of the devil. The place of witches sabbaths and society’s outcasts—a fertile cauldron for 17th century society fear to grow. Time progressed, and these haunted woods were boxed in, hedged and pushed by unfettered rampant capitalism. Abandoned farmsteads and burial grounds plowed and paved over. Along canals, highways, behind box stores, the edges of graveyards and industrial buildings—these patches of scrubby overgrown land have become the realm of teenage parties, transient encampments, cruising, deviant behavior—the sorts of things that fill tabloids and the nightly news. It’s here, in this incubator of modern society’s nightmares, where these paintings exist.”
