MATERIAL GIRLS

Far Point

February 8–March 23, 2025

Opening reception Saturday, February 8, 2025, 3–5 PM

In Far Point, MATERIAL GIRLS cocoon the Light Well in layers of fabric and moving images, turning our project space into an intersection where multiple dimensions converge. Videos of ordinary moments filmed by members of the collective are refracted and distorted across the illusory terrain of the installation, forming an intimate portal between the mundane and the extraordinary.

MATERIAL GIRLS

Far Point is a site-specific installation for the Light Well at Turley Gallery, exploring light—its presence, absence, and interplay with physical and digital layers. Integrating moving images, printed textiles, mirrors, and fans, the work blurs boundaries between natural and artificial elements. Central to the installation is a collaborative multichannel video, built from spontaneous recordings of everyday moments shared between MATERIAL GIRLS’ members. This exchange collapses spaces and times, weaving environments, movements, and textures into a layered tapestry of shared quotidian perception.

Responding to the Light Well’s architectural in-betweenness and design to channel the outdoors, the MATERIAL GIRLS installation reflects and recreates natural phenomena: artificial suns, false moons, and the rhythms of changing light. Shadows, reflections, and light frequencies become tools to explore the interrelation between simulation and reality. By layering these elements, Far Point deals with perception, space, and the fluid boundaries between real and constructed environments, reflecting on how light shapes our understanding of place, time, and closeness.

MATERIAL GIRLS is a flexible and non-hierarchical collective of artists dedicated to building community, fostering collaboration, and facilitating exhibitions. Currently MATERIAL GIRLS’ members are Rachael Starbuck (Pittsburgh, PA), Gracelee Lawrence (Climax, NY), Claire Lachow (Brooklyn, NY), Hilliary Gabryel (Queens, NY), and Cameron Cameron (Los Angeles, CA). Founded in 2016 by a group of female sculptors seeking solidarity outside an institutional context, MATERIAL GIRLS collaborates on site-specific installations and projects that exhibit artists' work in their extended network. While each member has an independent studio practice, the collective explores overlapping areas of interest including gender politics, ongoing negotiations between humans and their environments, communication across distance, and the fluid relationship between digital and physical touch. MATERIAL GIRLS has been featured in publications including PAPER Magazine, Hyperallergic, Dallas Morning News, Art F City, and Conflict of Interest. Selected exhibitions include “Waiting for the Update” at James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA); “Desire Paths” at Sweet Pass Sculpture Park (Dallas, TX); “My Shell Makes Itself” at 5-50 Gallery (Queens, NY); “Palms” at Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Los Angeles, CA); “xenomorphs” at Spring Break Art Show (New York, NY); and “xoxo” at The Museum of Human Achievement (Austin, TX).
